Gum (Gingival) Disease
Gum problems are found in a large number of people. Many of them are not
aware of this. Some of them ignore it and try not to bother about this
condition. As gum problems are difficult to be noticed in layman's eyes, regular
dental checkups are the only way to diagnose this condition in time. Otherwise,
you will notice this condition only when the condition becomes serious and your
teeth become loose. The chances of getting infected by AIDS virus are
comparatively much higher for people with gum problems. In such patients, even a
kiss from a virus carrier can pass the virus easily in to them.
Routine dental check ups are the best way to stay ahead of gum problems. Only
your dentist can notice any infection at an early time and thus prevent this
from becoming much severe than it is. Some signs of gum problems are bleeding
while brushing or flossing, bad breath, gums turning red, swollen gums, receding
gums, pus coming from gums when pressure applied etc. At the sight of any of
these symptoms, check it out with your dentist so as to prevent the situation
becoming worse.
Your dentist is the right person to catch gum problems at its inception. So
stick to your routine dentist appointments. The dentist may use periodontal
probe or X-rays to evaluate the health of your gums. He may request you to
undergo surgical or non-surgical procedures so as to fix any existing problems
like bone loss, deep pocketing etc.
The dentist uses periodontal probe to check the health of your gums. When this
instrument is used on healthy gums, it will only go from 1 to 3 millimeters in
the space between the teeth and gum. But in case of gums that are infected, the
periodontal probe can from 3 to 5 millimeters. If there is plaque in between or
around the gums, the gum and tooth may recede away from each other. This will
expose the root. Food particles and plaque are going to fill this area and cause
the worsening of gum problems. In severe cases of these problems, the roots will
be covered in plaque and this can eventually cause the tooth to fall off. If you
stick to a thorough dental care regimen and follow up on your dentist
appointments properly, you may never face this situation.
Three out of every four adults are thought to be suffering from periodontal
problems. But if they take preventive measures like proper dental cleaning,
following up on regular dentist appointments, taking X-rays to get a thorough
idea of their dental health, healthy dental care practices like regular tooth
brushing and flossing etc, then the condition can be prevented from worsening.
Non-surgical procedures like scaling and root planing are used to remove any
plaque accumulated on the gums. This is not going to prevent future recurrence
of the problem. The patient has to clean the area regularly. Scaling and planing
is effective in the early stages of periodontal diseases and can reduce any
chances of tissue damage. If the periodontal disease is in an advanced stage,
then surgical treatment is the only way to go.
Periodontal disease is a serious dental problem and needs the commitment from
the patient's part to stick to continuous treatment. If he does not adhere to
the treatment program, any eventual recurrence of the disease can cause bone
damage and even tooth loss. Whatever be the treatment method you are sticking
to, surgical or non-surgical, you must regularly follow up on your dentist
visits and prevent the condition from recurring. Gum problems can be a serious
issue. But they can be brought under control through continuous care and
treatment..
